Goa Birding Camp: 2016

Batch I: 24th-27th Nov 2016          Bookings open

Day 1:

Pick up and transfer to Nature’s Nest. Nature’s Nest is an eco lodge located on the border of the Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary with Goan village style cottages. This is where you will be staying and having all your meals.
Post Lunch birding will be in the campus itself and the part of the sanctuary near the camp site. The forest will be dry deciduous with a stream flowing through it.
The species likely to be seen are Crimson-backed Sunbird, Purple-rumped Sunbird, Purple Sunbird, Malabar Parakeet, Malabar grey Hornbill, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Orange Minivet, Small Minivet, Chestnut headed Bee-eater, Jungle Babbler, Brown-headed Barbet, White-cheeked Barbet, Malabar Barbet, Grey-fronted Green Pigeon.

Day 2:

Morning birding will begin early at Bondla Wildlife Sanctuary. Bondla is known as one of the best birding areas in Goa in terms of the number of species one can see in a visit. The overall forest type is moist deciduous with patches of semi-evergreen forest also seen. Most of it is secondary forest with not a lot of tall trees which makes sighting birds and photographing them easier.
Here some of the species covered will be Coppersmith Barbet, Indian Grey Hornbill, Ashy Woodswallow, 4 species of swallows, Dusky Crag Martin, Blyth’s Starling, Chestnut-tailed Starling, White-rumped Munia, Black-throated Munia, Golden-fronted Leafbird, Crested Serpent Eable, Crested Hawk eagle, Shikra, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Orange-headed Thrush, Green Bee-eater, Flame-throated Bulbul, White-browed Bulbul, Black-naped Monarch, Asian Paradise Flycatcher, Malabar trogon, Asian Fairy Bluebird, Lesser Goldenback, Greater Goldenback, Heart-spotted Woodpecker.
We will return to Nature’s Nest for Lunch.
Post Lunch we will proceed to Tambdi Surla area of Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. This is one of the prime areas in Bhagwan Mahavir WLS known for all kinds of wildlife (Birds, butterflies, odonates, herpetofauna). The forest here is semi-evergreen primary forest with very tall trees. Here we look for specific species like the Blue-eared Kingfisher which is found only along forest streams. Malabar whistling Thrush, Brown-breasted Flycatcher, Malabar Pied Hornbill, Malabar Barbet, White-bellied Woodpecker, Dark-fronted Babbler.
Post Dinner there will be a trail around the camp site for Nightjars. 3 species of nightjars are found in the area. There are also chances of seeing some owls like the Brown Fish Owl, Brown Hawk Owl, Brown Wood Owl.

Day 3:

Morning birding will again be in Bondla WLS in order to cover the species which were missed earlier. Species which would be seen are Vernal hanging Parrot, Jerdon’s Leafbird, Nilgiri Flowerpecker, Common Iora, Plum-headed Parakeet, Malabar Trogon, Black-hooded Oriole.
Post Lunch birding will be in the part of the sanctuary close to the camp site to look for Ceylon Frogouth.

Day 4:

In the morning we will take the boat Safari in river Zuari and the Cumbharjua Canal to look for mangrove species of birds. Most of the birds seen in the area are winter migrants to Goa. We will look for species like Peregrine Falcon, Greater Crested Tern, Common Sandpiper, Terek Sandpiper, Common Redshank, Common Greenshank, Western Reef Egret, Great Egret, Gull-billed Tern, Osprey, Common Kingfisher, White-throated Kingfisher, Lesser Pied Kingfisher, Stork-billed Kingfisher, Black-capped Kingfisher, Collared Kingfisher, Brahminy Kite, Little Heron, Black-crowned Night Heron, Wooly-necked Stork.

Then we will proceed to Carambolim lake for more wetland birds. Some of the birds likely to be seen are Purple Swamphen, Common Moorhen, Lesser whistling Teal, Cotton Pygmy Goose, Spot-billed Duck, Darter, Little Cormorant, Indian Cormorant, Grey Heron, Purple Heron, Glossy Ibis, Little ringed plover, Indian Golden Oriole, Blue-tailed Bee-eater, Osprey, Greater Spotted Eagle, Western Marsh Harrier, Ruddy Shelduck.


Fees: Rs. 13,500/-  per head


Fees Include:  Transfers, stay on twin sharing, all meals (veg & non-veg), guiding charges, Boat safari charges and Sanctuary entry tickets.


Fees Don’t include: Mineral water charges, Camera ticket charges, Beverages and anything else not mentioned in the “fees include” list.
